This research study examined the question: What is the parent's experience of losing a first pregnancy? An estimated 15%-20% of pregnancies in the United States end in miscarriage with an additional 1% ending in a stillbirth (Center for Disease Control, 2015). This traumatic experience can lead to isolation and is reinforced by social misconceptions and traditional medical practices. The absence of adequate support and a place to process the intense and overwhelming emotions can contribute to a complicated grief reaction. This study examined the experience of a first pregnancy loss for 10 parents 21 years of age or older and utilized the heuristic research model. The study is intended to contribute to the fields of psychology and social work, as well as to the work of grief and pregnancy counselors, obstetricians and other medical professionals, educators, parents, and society as a whole. This study presents the grief experience surrounding pregnancy loss as a traumatic and continuous process. The core themes identified in this study are: experiencing the trauma of pregnancy loss, feeling alone in grief, believing that they are forever changed, and accepting grief as a process. The intention behind this research is to promote awareness and discussions regarding pregnancy loss, to advocate for increased support for parents and families, and to broaden both the medical community's and society's perception of pregnancy loss.
