Hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum ferritin, serum iron, total iron binding capacity and transferrin saturation were estimated at baseline and at the end of treatment. The presence and severity of helminthic infections was estimated from stool samples. Dietary data was collected from two 24-hour recalls and one food frequency questionnaire. Overall prevalence of helminthic infections was 65%. The diet in the population was very monotonous and of low iron bioavailability. Average duration of supplementation was 14 $\pm$ 4 weeks and compliance 64%. After treatment prevalence of anemia was slightly reduced in the TW group but increased in those in WS group. Hemoglobin concentrations were maintained with the TW regimen but decreased from baseline values in the WS group. None of the regimens avoided a drop in serum ferritin concentrations. The overall prevalence of side effects reported was similar in both regimens but the prevalence of some specific side effects was higher with the WS regimen. Based on these results, supplementation programs for anemic pregnant women with iron on a weekly or twice weekly basis cannot be expected to alleviate the anemia.
